I'm not sure I understand what beach is tryng to describe, but I would hesitate to apply any kind of sealant (polyurenthane) with binders over a finish that has been previously stained and sealed. You didn't really describe the bar/table and what kind of sealant it has. I assume it was stained and then finished with some type of varnish or polyurethane, depending on the age of the furniture piece.
anyway, to rework the bar/table to match your other furniture, you'll probably have to do some work on it. First, is the bar/table solid wood or is it covered with veneer?
